Match 104 Wednesday, May 4th, 1966
Debut for Ray Treacy and Bobby Gilbert and John Keogh
The Irish Independent put it "The selectors of the Republic of Ireland were left in no doubt what they deserved last night in Dalymount Park. They took a hammering both as regards the attendance, the crowd was one of the smallest for many years , and on the field of play where the local boys proved no match for the World Cup bound Germans."
The attendance at the game was 16,091 yielding gate receipts of £4,000 (approx).
This was the West German team that was to be beaten in the World Cup final later in the year by England. They proved to be far too good for an Irish team.
Germany had stars in Beckenbaur 21 year old Bayern Munich attacking wing back.A perfect partner for him was Haller the Italian based inside forward. An inspiring captain was Uwe Seeler.
Germany took the lead after five minutes when Hornig left Foley floundering and found Haller in the clear. Dunne in the Irish goal had no chance with the subsequent inside rights drive.
Foley injured himself against the railings on the stand side being replaced by John Keogh in the 10th minute.
Beckanbaur put the Germans further in front when he raced through the defence and after laying off the ball to Seeler continued his run to receive the return pass to slam the ball past Dunne.
Treacy and Gilbert both had half chances but were unable to convert them.
Further goals in the second half by Overath in the 55th and 72nd minutes gave the Germans a score that their superiority deserved.
