Ireland start with good win over Cyprus in UEFA Qualifier

Brian Kerr's Republic of Ireland Under-17s got their European Championship qualifying campaign off to a great start with a 4-0 win over Cyprus at Richmond Park tonight. Sunderland's Richie Ryan hit a brace for the Republic, opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time to give the home side a one goal advantage at the break.

Manchester City's William Flood added the second after 63 minutes, before Ryan struck again seven minutes later to give Ireland a three goal cushion. Fulham's Michael Timlin completed the rout in the 78th minute to give Ireland confidence ahead of Wednesday's clash with Slovenia at Belfield and their final group game against Yugoslavia at Richmond Park on Friday.

Earlier this afternoon group rivals Yugoslavia beat Slovenia 3-0 at Dalymount Park. Cyprus will paly Yugoslavia at The Carlisle Grounds on Wednesday, and complete their campaign on Friday against Slovenia at Whitehall.
