Match 125 Saturday, May 9th , 1970
Ireland having been beaten 2-1 to Poland only three days previously played much better in this game but fell by the same score line.
It could have been much differant as Mulligan had a great header come back off the crossbar after only 25 seconds. It was certainly a case of what might have been as Mulligan and Giles controlled midfield.
Even so Seeler put the Germans ahead after 18 minutes when his headed effort from Overath's corner went into the net via Eoin Hand.
Givens had the chance to equalise but after waltzing through the German defence sliced his shot wide of the target.
The second German goal was questionable as Lohr looked offside when he deflected Held's shot past Alan Kelly.
Ireland got a deserved reward for their work when Mulligan headed home from an Eamon Dunphy cross. Even the locals applauded this goal.
The game aws not without incident as Beckenbaur was yellow carded for a nasty tackle on Eoin Hand. After the game Dempsey had to have four stitches inserted ina nasty gash over his right eye a reminder of his battles with centre half Schulz.
