Match report
Aston Villa goalkeeper Wayne Henderson has his eyes firmly set on a place in the Republic of Ireland senior squad and knows just how to get it.

Henderson is in Madeira this week with the Ireland under-21 side and is hoping to secure his place as Dan Connors long-term successor.

His quest starts this morning when he lines up in goal against Portugal in the opening game of the Madeira International Tournament (KO 11:00).

But he admits that a place in Brian Kerrs squad is part of his plan and he is aiming to attract the managers attention by performing to the highest standard possible.

"The only two goalkeepers playing regular first team football at the moment are Shay Given and Paddy Kenny," he said.

"Brian Kerr likes to have three goalkeepers and he is not afraid to bring in someone with less experience so I do sometimes wonder that if I get a run of first team games, if I would get in the squad.

"I am not even talking about playing or sitting on the bench - I think that you would need a lot of experience to push Shay Given out - but just to train with people and learn from the experience."

Kerr has went on record stating that his desire for Givens back-up to be experienced goalkeepers playing first team football, but at the moment, only Kenny fits that description and he has yet to play international football.

Henderson acknowledges that he is lacking in experience, but believes that with a run of first team football, anything is possible.

With this in mind, he is determined to move to a club on loan once he returns from Madeira.

"I have been given the go ahead to go out on loan. All season, Villa have wanted to keep three keepers just in case but after losing to Bolton, we do not have that many games left so I am now available for loan and I hope for something to be set up when I get back from Madeira."

Ireland manager Don Givens also believes that a loan move is vital to Hendersons development.

"Unfortunately for young goalkeepers, when people want to take them on loan from a Premiership club they want an experienced goalkeeper, not a young kid," he said.

"But Wayne knows what he needs and he is right to look for a move. I will be on at them all the time to get some kind of football that matters.

"He can look at what it did for Graham Stack.

"He was going nowhere until he went to Belgium for the year, played first team football, and is now number two at Arsenal and getting a call-up for the Brazil game."
