First Official Game
Statto: Every player makes debut
This game is regarded as Ireland's first official International fixture. Ireland traveled to Turin to be defeated by the local side who scored three times without reply.
The headline from the Irish Times had
“Free State XI defeated – 12,000 spectators in Turin “
The Irish were traveling as favorites and as the Times put it
“But that the Irish would bring back victory was regarded as a foregone conclusion seeing that they were a good, level team, capable individually and collectively of playing first class football”
The Times goes on to say that
“ Some allowance has to be made as a result of traveling. They (the team) left Dublin on St Patrick’s Day (Wednesday 17th March)and arrived in Turin at 6 am on Saturday 20th March – (The match was played on Sunday 21st March “.
Italy scored after 13 minutes with a goal by Baloncieri followed by two other goals in the first half by Magnozzi 30- “ the second goal against us was due to misjudgment (no particular player named) and Bernardini scored the third after 44 minutes.
Although Ireland were outplayed the defence performed heroics as Brady (Fordsons) was brilliant.
Ireland improved in the second half and enjoyed a good share of the play. The shooting was wretched with Flood (Shamrock Rovers) was unlucky not to find the net.
