Harry Charsley and Sean Maguire both scored in the last five minutes to give Noel King's side all three points in Waterford
Noel King's Republic of Ireland Under-21 side recorded a late victory over Slovenia at the RSC, keeping their slim hopes of qualification for the 2017 U21 European Championship alive.
Everton's Harry Charsley netted the opener with three minutes to go before substitute Sean Maguire scored from the spot moments after his introduction.
The Boys in Green probed throughout and had some good chances on goal through Charsley and debutant Courtney Duffus, who both had low drives saved by Grega Sorcan.
Fellow debutant Olamide Shodipo had Ireland's best chance after using his pace to beat the defence, but the Queens Park Rangers wideman could only chip the ball over the net.
Despite sitting second in the group table, Slovenia created little and looked content to hold out for a draw until Ireland's late surge.
A fantastic ball from Jack Byrne into the area was chested down by Josh Cullen, leaving Charsley with a simple tap-in to give Ireland the lead.
King introduced Cork City hotshot Maguire from the bench, and he made an instant impact with a darting run into the area. Denis Sme felled the forward, getting his second yellow card, before Maguire dusted himself off to convert the penalty.
The win takes Ireland just three points behind Slovenia with two games remaining in Group 2. |
