Match report
The Republic of Ireland ended the International break on a positive note as they drew 1-1 with Poland at the Stadion Miejski in Wroclaw on Tuesday evening.

A second-half header from debutant Aiden O’Brien looked set to earn Martin O’Neill’s side a morale-boosting victory following their 4-1 loss away to Wales but Mateusz Klich’s late leveller earned Poland a share of the spoils.

Poland started the match brightly and they ought to have taken the lead after just ten minutes but Arkadiusz Milik could only head Marcin Kaminski’s flick-on from a long throw-in wide of the far left post.

The home side, who were eliminated from the recent World Cup in Russia at the group stage, again went close to opening the scoring just shy of the half an hour mark but Grzegorz Krychowiak turned Kaminski’s driven shot off target from a few yards.

Ireland’s best opportunity of a tame first half fell to Aiden O’Brien but the Millwall striker fired his attempt past the near post from a decent position.

The Irish created the first chance of the second period shortly after the restart but Callum O’Dowda’s powerful strike was straight at the Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Ireland would take the lead in the 54th minute as Aiden O’Brien nodded Callum O’Dowda’s cross past the Juventus keeper to ensure it was a dream debut for the 24-year-old forward.

But it wouldn’t be enough to earn his side the win as substitute Mateusz Klich curled the ball into the top right corner with three minutes remaining after combining well with Arkadiusz Milik on the edge of the area.
