Match report | Preview
The Republic of Ireland ended their international season with a scoreless draw with Hungary at the Ferenc Szusza Stadium.

8th Jun 2021

Stephen Kenny’s side showed plenty of promise with competitive debuts for Caoimhin Kelleher and Chiedozie Ogbene.

Stephen Kenny made changes to the side with Shane Duffy coming into the defence and Adam Idah partnering with Troy Parrott upfront.

Despite an early press from the home side it was Ireland who had the best chance early in the contest with Josh Cullen’s free-kick was met by John Egan but his header came back off the crossbar.

The home side were resorted to long-range efforts with the best coming from Laszlo Kleiinheisle but Gavin Bazunu was not troubled by the effort as it went wide.

Ireland continued to press with a strong defensive display and playing from the back. Gavin Bazunu was called into action following a cross sent into the Irish area was met by Adam Szalai and his goalbound header were excellently saved by the Irish netminder.

For Ireland, James McClean\'s sent in a clever cross from the left that was nearly met by Shane Duffy but it went wide of the goal. Caoimhin Kelleher on his senior debut had to make a smart save to deny Adam Szalai at the near post.

Daryl Horgan sent in a teasing cross to Adam Idah however it was cleared away at the opportune time. Laszlo Kleinheisler had an opportunity for the home side as he broke free of James McClean, his effort however was well saved by Kelleher.

Idah had a great opportunity as he found space in the defence but his low effort was well saved by the keeper. Ireland continued to press and some good build-up play from the right saw Jason Knight cross to the back post to James McClean but his header was well saved.

Adam Szalai was a constant attacking threat for the home side but Caoimhin Kelleher was called in twice to deny both the striker and Attila Szalai in quick succession. After coming on in the final minutes Chiedozie Ogbene nearly broke the deadlock but his effort struck the side netting but it wasn’t to be as Ireland had to settle for a draw but the highlight was a clean sheet for both Gavin Bazunu and Caoimhin Kelleher who both were called into action to make fine saves in the contest.
