In Poland's Stadion Miejski im Wladyslawa Krola, the Republic of Ireland and Ukraine played out an entertaining 1-1 draw.
14th Jun 2022
Stephen Kenny's side took the lead thanks to a magnificent solo goal from Nathan Collins, but Dovbyk levelled for Ukraine early in the second half.
James McClean captained the side as Stephen Kenny made three changes: Scott Hogan, Darragh Lenihan, and Dara O'Shea. From a cross from Molumby, Jason Knight had an early chance on goal, but it was diverted for a corner.
Malinovskyi got Ukraine's first attempt on target of the game, a well-placed effort that Caoimhin Kelleher saved. Troy Parrott's header from a cross from Knight flashed across the face of the goal, giving the visitors the best chance of the opening exchanges of the first half.
After Mykolenko broke free down the left flank, Kelleher was called into action to make another save after the Irish goalkeeper blocked the low shot with his feet. At the half-hour mark, Ireland took the lead when Nathan Collins latched onto a wayward pass and broke free of the Ukraine defence, striking a well-placed attempt past Riznyk with the outside of his right boot.
Ireland came close to adding a second when Collins and Molumby combined to set up Jason Knight on the edge of the area, but Riznyk saved his effort. Ukraine equalised minutes after the restart as Mykolenko makes a clever move into the area and lay its off to Dovbyk to score his fourth international goal.
Ireland responded to that concession with Troy Parrott's shot from a Jason Knight ball was deflected at the near post for a corner, almost giving the away side the lead again. Knight was the next player to put Riznyk to the test, but his long-range shot was well stopped by the Ukrainian goalkeeper.
Callum Robinson delivered a pass into Ogbene as the game approached full time, but Riznyk cut it out at the crucial moment. Yarmolenko had a chance to win it for Ukraine, but O\'Shea made an excellent defensive stop.
With this result, Ireland now has four points heading into the Nations League's last series of games in September.
