The Republic of Ireland U17 team were defeated 2-1 by hosts Croatia in the first of two international friendlies today bringing their five match unbeaten record to an end.
Despite Tom Mohans side producing a solid performance where plenty of goal chances were created, it was not enough to overcome the home side in Novigrad this afternoon.
Ireland started well with the score remaining at 0-0 at half-time. The energised Croatians then started the second half with vigour scoring two goals within 15 minutes of resuming play after the interval. The first coming from a volley, while the second was the result of a penalty, both from Ante Roguljic in the 48th and 58th minutes respectively.
Debutant Reece Cox produced a convincing performance after scoring within minutes of coming off the bench in the second half from 10 yards.
The Irish missed a number of chances with Jack Byrne, Cody Mulhall, and Conor Shaughnessy all narrowly missing out in an attempt to equalise with the Croatians.
"This has proven to be a very useful exercise. We had a lot of new players, and despite the result, they really worked hard and produced a convincing performance" said Mohan.
"The team created a lot of chances, especially towards the end of the second half. Conor Shaughnessy was unlucky, while Jack Byrne had a shot deflected.’
"Croatia are a strong, composed side, but overall I felt it was a good team performance.”
"We have another fixture on Thursday so we have to look to that. I intend to freshen things up and use the game as another opportunity to experiment before next month’s qualifiers. "
