Republic of Ireland U17 3 Azerbaijan 2

The Republic of Ireland under-17 side continued their preparations for the upcoming UEFA Championships qualifiers with a 3-2 victory over Azerbaijan at Milebush, Castlebar.

Tom Mohan's side got off the a great start when Jake Mulraney won a penalty in the sixth minute and midfielder Cody Mulhall stepped up to convert from the spot.

Mulraney brought the best out of visiting keeper Hasamli Ali in the 18th minute with a dangerous free-kick from wide on the right.

Corey Galvin showed his quality in the 31st minute with a low strike that the keeper did well to push around an upright.

Five minutes later Ireland went 2-0 up when Stephen Confey slotted home after clever work by Val Feeney in the build-up.

The Irish were rocked less than a minute later when Kevin Toner was unfortunate to concede a penalty and Madatov Mahir beat Harry Doherty from 12 yards out.

Galvin then produced some magic on the left wing to burn the Azeri defence and send in a low ball across goal that defender Vamavamai Mancur was unfortunate to turn into his own net.

With Mulhall and Jordan Toland impressing in midfield and Castelbar's Noe Baba pulling the strings at the back, Mohan's side looked comfortable before the break.

Mahir added a second for the Azeris in the 61st minute when he scored from close range after a clever corner kick routine but the Irish held out for the victory.

Ireland face Macedonia, Sweden and Romania in the qualifiers from September 29 to October 4.

"It was another good workout for us although we were a little sloppy after the break," said Mohan.

"The exercise was about looking at players ahead of the qualifiers and we've had a good chance to see what the lads can do.

"The second half was a good test for us and I've learned a lot about the squad this week."
