Match report
The Republic of Ireland Under 16s drew 0-0 with Sweden in the first of two friendlies between the two countries at Whitehall on Tuesday night.

700 supporters were in attendance on a pleasant evening in Whitehall and they were treated to an entertaining game of football, even if there were no goals.

As expected, Ireland were the brighter side with striking pair David Hutton and Karl Byrne causing plenty of problems for the Sweden defence throughout their time on the pitch.

Hutton was first to threaten with a volley after six minutes that was well off target, but the ball fell kindly for Paul Cahillane whose cross picked out Byrne only for the striker to head wide.

But it was the Swedes who had the ball in the net in the 28th minute when an untimely slip by Ireland goalkeeper David Bevan meant a free kick from the half way line by Andreas Landgren dropped into the net. However, Bevan’s blushes were spared because the free kick was in fact indirect.

The home side nearly took advantage moments later when a nice build-up led to Graham Carey firing inches over from the edge of the area while Byrne shot inches wide after a sweeping cross field pass by Donal McDermott picked him out unmarked.

Ireland continued to dominate the second half with Cahillane, Hutton and Carey all going close before Lorcan Fitzgerald went closest of all with a shot that shaved the Swedish upright.

Ireland face Sweden again on Thursday morning at Whitehall (Kick off 11:30).
