Under-16 International Friendly
Republic of Ireland 0-3 France

The football education for the Republic of Ireland Under-16s continued today when they faced a stern test against France in the first installment of this week’s double-header at the Oscar Traynor Centre in Dublin.

The Irish could count themselves unlucky to have been trailing at the break but they were stretched early in the second half and France extended their lead with a brace of goals netted two minutes apart.

Vincent Butler’s Irish side matched their opponents in midfield for long spells yet they were unable to fashion many chances and the clinical finishing of the French proved decisive.

Ireland striker Chris Lyons was on the end of the first real opportunity in the game on 13 minutes when he ran onto a cross from Brian McGroary but flashed his shot low and wide of the post from the edge of the area.

Yaya Sanogo showed a sign of his class as he wriggled away from his marker five minutes later to get a clear sight on goal but Ireland goalkeeper Sean McDermott blocked the shot.

Mamadou Doucoure set off on a run towards the Irish penalty area after 22 minutes, inviting the challenge from Conor Morrissey which Referee Richie Winter deemed a foul and awarded a penalty kick.

McDermott guessed right by diving to his right and stopping the spot-kick from Anthony Koura but Sanogo followed up to convert the rebound from close-range.

Lyons blasted a shot over the crossbar as half-time approached but Ireland were hit by two sucker-punches shortly after the resumption.

Firstly, Ibrahima Tandia battled through the Irish defence two minutes into the second half and slotted the ball beyond the goalkeeper for the second goal.

If that wasn’t enough to stun Ireland, the gap was widened two minutes later as Koura delivered a cross from the left which Sanogo connected with to give McDermott no chance.

Ireland livened up their game and carved out a number of chances to get back into the match. Lyons forced a good stop from French goalkeeper Alphonse Aerola on 48 minutes and defender Sean McGinty was a foot too high with his header from the resulting corner.

A flowing move after 62 minutes involving substitute John O’Sullivan and Lyons found its way to Daniel McGuinness on the edge of the area and his drive was batted away by Aerola. The netminder had to be alert to deal with a stinging follow-up shot from 30 yards by Morrissey.

The Republic of Ireland will meet France again on Thursday, also at the Oscar Traynor Centre (11am).
