Match report
Croatia 1-0 Republic of Ireland

THE Republic of Ireland U16 team finished out the UEFA Development Tournament in Magglingen, Switzerland, with a 1-0 defeat by Croatia in a keenly contested encounter this morning.

Tom O'Connor's side faced an impressive Croatian outfit that included a player has played first team football in the Croatian top division already this season.

The Irish started extremely well and could have taken the lead as early as the first minute when Croatian keeper Bruno Satulo made a save and from the resulting corner Michael Dilger had his header blocked on the line by a defender.

Steven Kinsella then had an effort from wide on the left in the 17th minute that deflected off defender Branimir Kalaica and struck a Croatian upright before goalkeeper Satulo dived on the loose ball.

Josh Barrett was unfortunate not to finish off a lightening counterattack four minutes later when he dragged his effort narrowly wide with only the keeper to beat.

Just before half-time a similar chance fell to Corey O'Keeffe and once again the Irish effort was just off target.

Croatia started strongly in the second half and took the lead when Ruben Livio Kotlar turned the ball home after Irish keeper Ross Treacy had initially made a good save with his feet.

The Irish settled down after the Croatian dominance early in the second half but they could not force an equaliser with Jesse Stafford-Lacey shooting over after good work by Conor Masterson four minutes from time.

Interesting Stafford-Lacey in the 61st minute and Croatia captain Kalaica in the 75th minute were sin-binned for ten minute spells in the experimental rules that UEFA were trialling in this tournament.

"Overall I was very pleased and felt it was an excellent performance. We were very good in the first half and could have been two up at least," said O'Connor.

"Croatia were that little bit more clinical with their chance. We were really delighted with the three performances this week. It's been a brilliant week getting three tough games in four days.

"The standard of the opposition was excellent, Tom Mohan was out watching and I'm sure he was impressed. These games will stand to the lads in preparation for his U17 squad in next season's UEFA qualifiers."
