Republic of Ireland 1-1 Austria (Ireland win 4-3 on pens)

Tom O'Connor's side produced a disciplined display against an Austria side that had a lot of early possession but a second half increase in tempo saw the Irish grab control and deservedly secure a draw.

The game was played with some experimental rules regarding yellow cards. In the 26th minute Irish defender Thomas O'Connor was sin-binned for eight minutes rather than being yellow carded.

Austria scored from the resulting free-kick after the incident with Philipp Riegler's free-kick from wide on the right being deflected into goal by an Irish defender.

Four minutes later Ireland had a let off following a goal mouth scramble when Austria's Dario Maresic smashed a strike off the home crossbar.

In the 34th minute Richie English tried a clever shot from distance that flew over but with O'Connor back on the pitch the Irish began to settle again.

Nine minutes into the second half Ireland's impressive midfielder Declan Rice had a strike fly just over from 25-yards out after connecting with lay-off from Luke Kiely.

In the 57th minute the game saw the experimental rules take effect once more. Goalkeeper Mario Schragl was sin-binned, sub sub keeper Nicolas Kristof came on for outfield player Riegler and Kristof saved from Kiely's deflected free-kick.

Ireland levelled in the 77th minute when Thomas Byrne burst into the box after Jamie Hamilton flicked the ball through and Byrne slotted home brilliantly to send the game to a penalty shoot-out.

Austria took the first penalty through Dominick Fitz and it was well-saved by Irish goalkeeper Mark Travers. Ireland scored all four of their spot-kicks from Thomas O'Connor, Jayson Molumby, Luke Kiely and Rian O'Sullivan before Travers saved again from Maurice Mathis.

"It took us a while to settle against a good team but once we realised that we weren't playing world-beaters and were capable of matching them we upped our tempo and started to cause them problems," said Irish coach Tom O'Connor.

"These games are about showing the players what it is all about to play in international football and I felt they learned a lot today.

"We'll recover now and prepare for the next two games against Denmark and the Czech Republic which again will give them plenty of international experience."
