Irish U16s record impressive victory over USA
THE Republic of Ireland U16 side continued their unbeaten run with a well-earned 1-0 victory over the USA in Gravenzande today.

11th Mar 2015

Republic of Ireland 1-0 USA

Tom O’Connor’s side are participating in the a Four-team tournament in the Netherlands and an 18th minute goal from Thomas Byrne decided the game.

Ireland will meet the hosts on Friday then round-up the tournament against the Czech Republic on Friday.

The Americans started well with Lucas Del Rosario creating a chance for Nick Taitague but he pulled his effort wide and less than a minute later Jayson Molumby shot wide after good work down right by Luke Kiely.

Ireland’s goal came ten minutes later when they broke quickly following a USA free-kick and Tyreke Wilson played the ball through for Byrne to finish brilliant into the top of the net.

Wilson had a penalty claim waved away in the 34th minute after he appeared to be pulled down and three minutes later a clever right wing cross from Kiely was knocked over from an Irish attacker.

In the 47th minute Irish striker Shola Ayoola has his shot blocked by US defender Rayshaun McGann and the loose ball went across the face of the American goal but nobody could get a touch to steer it in.

Less than 60 seconds later a free-kick by Wilson to back past for the head of Daniel McKenna but his header was well saved by US keeper Eric Lopez. In the 50 minute Wilson’s cross found Ayoola but his volley was straight at keeper Lopez.

The US forced a decent save from Irish keeper Mark Travers in the 55th minute when Jose Carranza fired in a testing free-kick.

In the 66th minute Byrne appeared on the left wing and produced a dangerous cross which Kiely turned goalwards and again Lopez produced a great save.

Irish sub Shane Stokes had an effort just over in the 78th minute and just before the end of the game the US came close to levelling when Tim Weah – son of AC Milan legend George – fired narrowly over.

Ireland were unbeaten in the recent four nations tournament in Dublin when they beat Austria and the Czech Republic on penalties before beating Denmark 1-0.

“Technically the USA were a good side but we kept our shape well. We scored an excellent goal on a breakaway with a top class finish from Thomas Byrne,” said O’Connor.

“It was a very disciplined performance. We limited the Americans to a couple of shots and Mark Travers made some good saves.

“This is another opportunity to experience tournament play. These players came through the Emerging Talent Programme and it’s a credit to the work that has been done that the players are showing they can play at this level.

“The result is great to give the lads a bit of confidence. We pressed high and we wanted to get a good result to replicate what would be expected when they play a group game in a UEFA qualifier.”
