Dobbs double helps Irish U16s draw with Czechs

THE Republic of Ireland U16 side finished off their participation in an invitational tournament in the Netherlands with a 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic in Gravenzande this afternoon.

15th Mar 2015

Republic of Ireland 2-2 Czech Republic

Tom O’Connor’s side shot great resilience to bounce back from 2-0 down after just 15 minutes against the Czechs. The sides had also drawn when they met in a similar tournament in Dublin last month.

Ireland’s week had seen them beat the USA 1-0, lose 4-0 in unfortunate circumstances to the hosts and then finish the group with today’s draw.

The Czechs went ahead in the eight minute when David Huf brilliantly found the net with a dipping free-kick that dropped into the bottom corner of the Irish goal.

In the 15th minute Filip Kubala was taken down in the penalty area and Czech skipper Richard Sediacek converted from the spot-kick.

The pressure continued with Irish keeper Mark Travers forced to deny Jakub Sipek a third Czech goal with a decent save.

Ireland eventually settled and got back in the game when they pulled one back in the 28th minute when Aaron Dobbs turned the ball home after a testing ball in from Tyreke Wilson.

The Irish levelled in the 33rd minute when Dobbs cut in from the right and produced a powerful strike that the keeper spilled and the ball eventually rolled into the net.

In the second half Ireland upped the pressure and pressed hard for a winner. Rian O’Sullivan delivered a dangerous ball in from the left in the 52nd minute that just eluded both Dobbs and Brian McGivern in front of an open goal.

O’Sullivan shot over two minutes later as the Irish pushed on and then in the 58th minute Dobbs and McGivern combined but again nobody could connect to steer the ball home.

Thomas Byrne had a 61st minute free comfortably saved by keeper Hugo Jan Backosky and from there on in neither side quite did enough to claim the victory.

“We were two goals down and probably got a bit of fortune after we got back into it. We deserved that. We were attacking for the whole second half just couldn’t get the winner,” said O’Connor.

“After losing 4-0 to the Dutch the players were a bit down but we responded well. It was a great exercise and we feel the players can take a lot from this for when they go to the qualifiers.

“We wanted them to feel what it was like going into the last game needing a result. It was a very good experience overall and we feel the players know a lot more about what is required at this level as a result of this week together.”
