Ireland’s U.15’s were victorious 5 – 4 on penalties last night against Scotland in this their first game of the Quadrangular Invitational Tournament in Germany.
Ireland were the brighter team in the opening 25 minutes, but a combination of bad finishing by the Irish forward-line plus last-ditch defending by the Scots kept the scores level. However, just before half-time Ireland were nearly punished on the counter-attack when the Scots broke free, but keeper Niamh Reid-Burke was quick off her line to avert the danger.
The second half started as the first half did with Ireland quickly gaining the upper-hand and carving out a number of chances from which they should have scored at least one. These included two one-on-one’s with the Scottish keeper who pulled off a couple of great saves. However, Scotland nearly won the game in the last ten minutes when again Reid-Burke kept her team in it with two outstanding saves.
With the two teams still deadlocked, the game went to penalties where Ireland calmly dispatched their five with great confidence and style. Indeed, keeper Reid-Burke proved to be the hero of the night when she saved the last of the Scottish penalties and then calmly stepped up to slot home the fifth and decision one for Ireland. The other penalty scorers were - Emily Hannon, Emer Flatley, Becky Walsh and Amy Ryan.
Ireland now go into tomorrows game against Wales full of confidence. Wales lost 7 – 1 against host country Germany later on last night.
