Republic of Ireland 1- 2 Switzerland

Switzerland struck the winning goal two minutes from the end to consign Ireland to a second defeat of the week at Gannon Park, Malahide this afternoon.

Ireland took the lead 20 minutes into the second half through Gillian McDonnell but the Swiss equalised with a penalty four minutes later by Jsamine Imboden before they made it 2-1 late on with a goal by Lara Keller.

Switzerland beat Ireland by the same score-line on Tuesday but they produced a vastly improved display and deserved to get something out of the game.

McDonnell thought she had given Ireland the lead after 16 minutes when she fired past 'keeper Schwery into the net but she had strayed marginally off-side.

The Dundalk striker was not to be outdone, however, when she put Ireland ahead in the second half with a tremendous 30-yard lob that lofted over the retreating 'keeper and into the lead.

Ireland held the lead for only a few minutes. Swiss playmaker Lara Keller was taken down inside the penalty area by Irish skipper Susan Hackett and Jsamine Imboden converted the spot-kick.

Switzerland 's fitness levels proved crucial as the game entered the final stages and Keller won the match with a superb piece of skill by skipping past her marker on the right side and curling a shot into the far corner past Irish 'keeper Niamh Reid-Burke.

The two matches provided manager Noel King with plenty to absorb and he looks forward to seeing his charges in action again next April when they play another double-friendly fixture in Dublin against Italy.
