Girls Under-17 International Friendly
Saturday 29th Sept
Republic of Ireland 0 France 3

The quality of France shone through as they defeated an experimental Irish Girl’s Under-17 team on Saturday afternoon at the Oscar Traynor Road Development Centre in Dublin.

The visitors opened the scoring after a half and hour through Marie Augis before a second-half brace from substitute Marina Makanza killed the game off.

Ireland are preparing for next month’s UEFA qualifiers in Turkey and the management team continued their process of trying out players as they seek to select their final squad for the competitive series.

The Republic team take on Moldova, Sweden and mini-group hosts Turkey in the UEFA Championship, first phase ties from October 19th – 24th. The top nation from each of the ten groups advances to the Elite stage alongside the six second-placed teams with the best record against nations finishing first and third in their groups.

Ireland coach Sharon Boyle said after the game:

“We must remember that France are one of the top countries in the World and our team was missing four of our best players.

“Julie-Anne Russell, Karen Duggan, Niamh Reid-Burke and Gillian McDonnell are all playing for the Irish Under-19 team which has today qualified from their UEFA qualifying group in Slovakia.

“This was a learning curve for most of the girls playing against the French. We know that, physically and technically, France were much better than us but we had to give new players a chance to show us what they can do in the friendly match today.

“I was pleased with how they performed. This brings to an end our warm-up matches and we look forward to the qualifiers in Turkey next month. Everybody is confident that can progress in the qualification series.”
