Match report
Switzerland 3-0 Republic of Ireland

A ten minute period of madness left the Republic of Ireland Women’s Under 19 squad with a disappointing result from their final preparation match in advance of their elite phase UEFA Championships mini-tournament in Slovenia next week.
The Irish started brightly and had the better chances in the opening twenty minutes with Aine O’Gorman threatening a nervous Swiss defence with her pace. The Irish were controlling matters and were comfortable moving the ball around the park.

In the 24th minute a lapse of concentration in defence led to a poor clearance which was pounced on by Memetaj Vlora to head home an opening goal for the Swiss. The Irish team hadn’t even recovered from this surprise when another mix-up led to a second goal one minute later.

The two goals changed the course of the game with the Swiss growing considerably in confidence and the Irish team rocked by the turn of events. Unfortunately a fine probing ball from the Swiss defence found the in form striker again who lobbed the keeper from 30 yards to score the third goal of the game, and get her hat trick, in the 35th minute.

The first Irish substitution was forced by injury in the 40th minute when Paula Murray was replaced by Diane Caldwell.

Manager Susan Ronan made three changes at the start of the second half with Nicola Twohig, Susan Donovan and Tara MacMahon coming on. The Irish team settled and put some pressure on the Swiss defence over the course of the opening period. Unfortunately the Swiss were comfortable with their three goal advantage and shored up a defence against every assault.

The Manager was disappointed with the result given that there was so little between the teams in terms of technical ability. However, with the UEFA Championships fast approaching, valuable lessons were learnt!
