Match report
Tom Lonergan, Jamie Mullins and Ben Quinn all found the net for Ireland while Aaron McGuire saved a second-half penalty with the scores level.

The result doesn’t tell the whole story with Ireland starting the brighter of the two teams and Edwin Agbaje striking the cross bar from 15 yards out. However, minutes later, Ireland’s positive play was rewarded when Lonergan scored his second in two games converting from a left wing cross into the box.

This seem to spark the home side into life and England turned the game on its head just before the break with goals from Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Charlie Webster.

In the second half England drew a save from McGuire early on but it was Ireland who were next to find the net. This time it was substitute Mullins who beat the English goalkeeper after a great cross from the right wing.

Four minutes after the equaliser England had an opportunity to go 3-2 ahead but McGuire, who conceded the penalty, made a great save from the spot kick and another from the follow-up.

England did finally take the lead when Darko Gyabi scored following a corner but it wasn’t to be the end of the scoring as Ireland equalised for a second time in the game. Quinn capitalised on an under-hit backpass to the England goalkeeper and put the ball through the ‘keeper’s legs to make it 3-3.

Head Coach Paul Osam said: “It was difficult to pick ourselves up following the result against Denmark but we started very well. We had chances and defended well and deserved our goal to take the lead.

“Where we let ourselves down was conceding two very avoidable goals before half time. But credit to the players they came out positive in the second half and it was a very good goal from Jamie Mullins.

“Aaron McGuire has made a great save from the penalty at 2-2 but we’ve then gone on to concede from a set-piece which is not acceptable at any level. Credit to the lads, they came back again and I’m pleased Ben got his goal because he had a very good game.”

Reflecting on the week as a whole, Osam was pleased with his squad’s reaction to the Denmark loss. He said: “We had a lot of meetings to correct what went wrong against Denmark and it was pleasing to see against England the urgency to defend. There’s no mercy at international football and teams will punish you. We’ve got good players and we can’t underestimate the ability of our team.”
