Match report
The Republic of Ireland Under-16 team suffered a second defeat in the Victory Shield following a 4-0 loss at the hands of Wales on Wednesday.

30th Oct 2019

All the goals came in the second half with Joel Cotterill, Christopher Popov (who netted twice) and a penalty from Williams Jenkins-Davies doing the damage to Paul Osam’s young side at Colliers Park, Wales.

The first clear chance of the game fell to the hosts. A cross by Cameron Congreve found Ruben Davies but his header was comfortably saved by Reece Byrne in the Irish goal.

Ireland began to grow in the game and began to press Wales. Darragh Reilly made an excellent interception and freed John Joe Power down the right. He won a free kick that was eventually cleared by the Welsh defence.

Wales looked to take more control of the contest and great build up by down the left saw a shot blocked by Aaron O’Reilly and danger cleared. Shortly after O’Reilly was called into action again this time he was on hand to clear off the line to keep the scores all square going into the break

However just after half time Wales took the lead. A scramble at the back post saw defender Cotterill turn the ball over the line.

Ireland tried to find a way back into the contest, substitute Tom Lonergan set up Glory Nzingo but the forward’s shot went narrowly wide of Ronnie Hollingshead’s goal.

On 58 minutes it was 2-0. Wales hit Ireland on the counter attack and substitute Popov was there to fire past Byrne.

Lonergan continued to pose a threat for Ireland. He took advantage of good pressing from the visitors and his effort went just wide of the top corner. A minute later Lonergan was involved again. He won the ball on the edge of the box and it fell to Edwin Agbaje whose effort just cleared the cross bar.

Wales put the game beyond Ireland when they made it 3-0 with six minutes left on the clock. Popov scored his second of the game after he got on the end of a cross to finish at the near post.

A minute later Wales made it four from the spot. Substitute Jenkins-Davies converting the penalty.

Next up for Ireland are neighbours Northern Ireland on Friday as they look to end the Victory Shield on a high note.
