Women’s Under-19 Friendly International
Wales 1 – 3 Republic of Ireland

Ireland won the first of this week’s double-header of friendly matches against Wales at Port Talbot.

All of the goals in the match arrived in the first-half. Senior International Aine O’Gorman put Ireland ahead on 11 minutes before the hosts equalised 14 minutes later.

The Irish scored twice in the final stages of the first half to gain an upper-hand in the tussle. Gillian McDonnell regained Ireland’s lead with a strike four minutes before the break and Stephanie Roche made it 3-1 on the stroke of half-time.
The teams meet again on Thursday night in the second of this week’s double-friendly.

The Irish Women are only three weeks away from their competitive qualifiers in Slovakia and manager Sue Ronan is pleased with the progress of her squad as they shape up for the competitive games against Croatia, Switzerland and mini-group hosts Slovakia from September 27th – October 2nd.

“We started the game off against Wales a bit sloppy but improved significantly as the match wore on. I was particularly satisfied with our performance in the second half even though we didn’t score any goals.”

Ronan’s team beat Poland twice last month in their first warm-up matches of the season.
