Republic of Ireland 3-0 Greece

The Republic of Ireland women’s under 19 team made a dream start to their UEFA championship first qualifying phase with a dominating 3-0 victory over Greece in Israel tonight (Wednesday.) Goals from Niamh Mulcahy, Amy Ryan and Louise Quinn in the space of 15 minutes capped a fine nights work in Nazareth where they duly put their opponents to the sword in a professional display from the young Irish side.

Susan Ronan’s side started brightly and they created numerous chances early on as the Greeks struggled to keep up with their Irish counterparts. The Irish rattled the Greek cross-bar three times in the opening third as they put their opponents under immense pressure.

Aisling Annacotty midfielder, Niamh Mulcahy opened the scoring in injury time in the first half. The Greeks struggled to clear a cross-field ball and the breaking ball came to Mulcahy at the edge of the area who smashed the ball off the crossbar and into the net.

Shortly after the break, Greece were further behind; the ever dangerous Stella Maris striker, Amy Ryan was played through on goal by Eilish Ward and she coolly blasted the ball past the helpless keeper to double the score after 50 minutes.

Ronan’s side made sure of the result in the 59th minute, a corner from the right hand side was swung into the head of central defender, Louise Quinn who powered her header into the net despite the close attention of the defence.

In today’s other game; Iceland defeated group hosts Israel 2-1 and they will now face Greece on Friday knowing that a victory will all but ensure them of their place at the UEFA championship, elite qualifying phase next year.

The top two teams in each of the eleven sections of the UEFA Championship, 1st qualifying phase will qualify for the elite qualifying phase along with the third-placed side with the best record against the leading pair in their pool. Those 23 teams will be joined by top seeds Germany in November's draw for the second qualifying round draw, which will take place from 23-28 April 2009, with six groups providing seven finalists to join the hosts in Belarus.
