Michelle Farrell got over the disappointment of losing out on a FAI Umbro U16 National Cup final to St. Joseph's last Sunday by scoring the winning goal after only five minutes after she slotted home following a clever through-ball from Douglas Hall starlet, Claire Shine.
The Republic of Ireland side started strongly and should have taken the lead as early as the second minute when Farrell had an effort saved from close range.
While Harry Kenny's side dominated for the entirety of the first half with Claire Shine and Raheny United's Katie McCabe hitting the woodwork, England rang the changes at half-time, changing the entire starting eleven which added fresh impetus to their attack after the break. Ireland endured a dominant England spell in the opening 15 minutes of the second half but to their credit, the Irish defence stood firm and did not allow the home side have any clear-cut attempts on target.
Speaking after the game, Irish manager, Harry Kenny said, "While we are absolutely delighted with the result, what was most pleasing about the game was the performance of the team. We could have scored a couple of goals in the opening minutes before Michelle (Farrell) took the lead with a superb finish. What is most pleasing is the organisation in defence, especially when we were under pressure in the second half. Not every team can come to England and get a victory and a team sheet so the team should take a lot of confidence from that," he said.
Both teams are once again in action tomorrow (Friday) at the Wellbeck in Leicestershire with a 10.30am kick-off. Kenny's squad are gearing up for the UEFA qualifying series which kicks-off on October 10 in Macedonia. Ireland will face Italy, Romania and the mini-group hosts chasing the one automatic place into the second, elite qualifiers next Spring. Runners-up spot could suffice if it's one of the best four across the ten groups.
