Match report
Republic of Ireland 2 Denmark 2

THE Republic of Ireland Women's U19 side will progress to the next phase of the UEFA Championships after a thrilling 2-2 draw with Denmark at Tolka Park tonight.

Dave Connell's side produced a top class display but were ultimately undone by two Danish equalisers in a top class game. The Danes top the group on goal difference but the Irish progress as one of the best placed runners-up.

It was Ireland who made the brighter start, with Amy O'Connor going close with a headed effort after some neat inter play with Wexford Youths full back Lauren Dwyer.

Indeed, the impressive O'Connor seemed to be at the heart of all Ireland's early dominance and again went close when club-mate Katie McCabe sent in a low cross from the left that just drifted wide on nine minutes.

Denmark, on a rare visit into the Irish box had a glorious chance to take the lead after 14 minutes when Anna Frisker latched on to dropping ball after a mistake in the Irish defence only to blaze over.

With the Irish girls well on top and the Danish defence becoming stretched, chances were becoming more frequent and it Katie McCabe, who was now cutting in from the left flank, who had a low effort saved by the resilient Christiansen in the Danish goal.

McCabe again went close when her header was again saved by the Danish skipper after an excellent cross from O Connor on the right.

Marie Maj Madsen, who was being well marshalled by Lisa Casserly and Shauna Newman in the middle of the park, brought out a comfortable save from Maloney in the 26th minute with a low stinging drive from all of 25 yards.

The breakthrough finally came a minute later, when the hardworking Clare Shine nodded home to give the Girls in Green a well deserved lead, a superb header from a Shauna Newman corner.

Ireland were now well on top and began to turn the screw with Gemma McGuiness, now pulling the strings in midfield, saw an effort tipped over the bar after the Danes failed to clear their lines following a mix up on the edge of their area.

In the 38th minute Ireland were awarded a penalty after a collision between McCabe and the Danish number 1. After dusting herself down, it was McCabe who stepped up to take the spot kick, a poor left footed effort sailed wide of the now charmed Scandinavian goal.

The Danes made a double substitution at the break, both coming down the left side in an attempt to keep O'Connor, who had run riot in the first half, quiet.

The visitors changed their formation to match Ireland's three in the engine room and it proved dividends with the away team gaining a foothold in the game.

Ireland were hit with a sucker punch in the 66th minute when a quickly-taken throw allowed Anna Fisker to convert after Irish keeper Jill Maloney had parried the initial shot by Sarah Hansen.

The goal which came against the run of play could have deflated the Irish girls, but to their credit they almost hit back straight away, McCabe bringing a stunning save from Christiansen. From the resulting corner, Ireland retook the lead. Shannon Carson arrived up from the back and rose highest to head her team back in front.

With Lisa Casserly being replaced by Lagan Harps' Amber Barrett, Ireland again reclaimed the initiative and bossed affairs until the 76th minute, when a speculative effort from Danish substitute Kamala Jenson looped over the unfortunate Maloney.

We were now set up for a grandstand finish, with the athletic Danish side driving at Ireland in waves, but the pairing of skipper Chloe Mustaki and the excellent Carson thwarted all in front of them. Even if a spectacular Mille Poulsen strike did rattle the Irish crossbar after 85 minutes.

Ireland had one last chance in the 88th minute when a free kick from Shauna Newman brought a good save from the Danish stopper.

After an enthralling tie, the shares were spoilt, Ireland no doubt were the better side but will have to be content with a runners up place in the group.
