Match report
Republic of Ireland 1 Turkey 0

REPUBLIC of Ireland Women's U17 head coach Dave Connell has paid tribute to his side after they secured their place in the next phase of the UEFA Championships after a 1-0 victory over Turkey in the qualifying round Group Four in Ulyanovsk, Russia, today.

Megan Connolly continued their phenomenal scoring record for her country with her 13th goal in 12 under-17 international appearances with the game's only goal in the 18th minute.

The College Corinthians striker fired to the roof of the Turkish net after excellent approach play involving Jessica Gargan and Jenny Clifford.

"Megan led the line well and scored a great goal. She's doing very well for us. She's going to be a real player if she keeps those standards up and continues to develop," said Connell.

"The girls played very well and we should have scored more but we missed a few decent chances. I'm very pleased because we've beaten a good side. They've a big population of players. So it's another scalp for us and that's us through to the next stage.

"We want to top the group but we'll deal with that when we meet Russia on Sunday.

"There were some outstanding performances. Savannah McCarthy played a real captain's role and held the back four together with Keeva Keenan beside her. Our keeper Amanda McQuillan didn't have a lot to do so I was very pleased with our display."

Ireland started well with Jamie Finn coming close in the 12th minute and Gargan had a chance in the 16th minute but just failed to connect with goalkeeper Zeynep Erdoğan out of position. Keenan also failed to convert with the goal at her mercy moments later.

After Connolly's goal broke the deadlock Roma McLaughlin had a shot unfortunately blocked by one of her own team-mates in front of goal in the 23rd minute.

Clifford had an effort saved one minute later then Connolly had an attempt just off target in the 37th minute. The second half proved to be a less lively affair with the Irish defence comfortably containing their opponents.
