Match report
Russia 1 Republic of Ireland 0

THE Republic of Ireland's Women's U17 international team suffered an unfortunate 1-0 defeat by Russia in their final UEFA Championships qualifying round fixture in Ulynanovsk this afternoon.

Both sides had already qualified for the next phase of the competition but the hosts top the group after three consecutive 1-0 victories.

Dave Connell's side created more of the chances and forced four corners to none from Russia but the Russians clinched the three points when Yana Khotyreva bagged the only goal just one minute into the second half after Ireland lost possession in midfield.

"We dominated large periods of the game and had a lot of chances but didn't convert them and got punished for a bit of poor defending," said Connell.

"First half Russia were restricted to a single shot on goal whereas we'd pounded down their goal without scoring.

"We're into the next phase and we're happy with that but we're into the next round and that's what we came here for. We'll look forward to the draw for the next phase but we've work to do and we realise that."
