Match report
Republic of Ireland 1 Sweden 0

IRELAND'S Women's U19 side finished the La Manga tournament unbeaten and on a real high after beating Sweden 1-0 this evening.

Dave Connell's youngsters maintained their excellent form this season with another impressive victory against one of the traditional powerhouses of women's football.

Jess Gargan - who turned 17 yesterday - proved to be Ireland's star with the match-winner in the 35th minute.

The Peamount striker dispossessed a Swedish defender then advanced before producing a brilliant lob over the Swedish keeper for a top class deciding goal.

"We played very well thoughout the game and thoroughly deserved the victory," said Connell.

"We restricted them to long range efforts. It was an all-round fantastic performance by the girls.

"Jess scored a brilliant individual goal. For a young girl who celebrated her 17th birthday the day before it was a lovely present for her.

"Overall it was a great week for us. We finished ahead of England, USA, Denmark, Scotland and Sweden - all top teams."

Connell's side will now focus on the UEFA Women's U19 Championships elite qualifying round in the Netherlands next month. Ireland meet Austria on April 5, the hosts on April 7 and Turkey on April 10.

"There's a great confidence with the girls now. It was great to face quality opposition this week but it's also been great for bonding between the players. They gelled on and off the park," said Connell.

"The qualifiers will be in three weeks in Holland. We've seen them here and they look good. Austria and Turkey will be tough too but we are aiming to qualify for the finals."
