Match report | Preview
It was a tough afternoon for Republic of Ireland Men's Under-16s as they lost 7-0 to Switzerland in Sweden today.

11th May 2022

Four first-half goals during a 10-minute spell did the damage in Ireland’s opening game of a UEFA Development Tournament in Ronneby. Three further goals in the second half completed the scoring with Switzerland's Jason Parente netting a hat-trick.

Ireland had started brightly and had two chances from Naj Razi. The first came in the 14th minute when the Shamrock Rovers forward cut-inside and forced Gentrit Muslija into a save. In the 29th minute Muslija was called into action again to prevent Ireland taking the lead through Razi.

But it would be a 10 minute-period where Switzerland showed their quality. The Swiss went ahead on the half-hour mark through Parente when he finished well into the bottom left-hand corner after the ball had broken to him on the edge of the area.

Four minutes later a cleared ball put Switzerland in a one-on-one situation and Cheveyo Tsawa was able to score.

It was 3-0 when Jamal Camci capitalised on an Ireland clearance to find the corner. In the 40th minute came the fourth when Parente got his second of the game with a back-post finish.

In the second-half Jamie Gamble made a fine save from Mario Greco down to his right. However, it was 5-0 in the 52nd minute - Luca Buhlmann’s cross come shot finding the Irish net. Samuele Tomeo would go on and make it 6-0 in the 69th minute.

Taylor Mooney had a chance to score a consolation when his effort beat the keeper but not the man on the line who was able to clear and not long after that Parente made it 7-0 in the 81st minute to complete the scoring.

Next up for the young Boys in Green are the hosts Sweden on Friday.
