Match 52
West Germany 3 (Posipal, O Walter, Termath) Republic of Ireland 0
Statto: Debut for Shay Gibbons
Beginning of the worst month in Irish international history - between now and June 1 Ireland play three games, lose all three, score none and concede fifteen!
Ireland fell to a German side who were "smarting" after their defeat in Ireland only 7 months previously.
Ireland played great football in the first half and with the crowd silenced were beginning to get on top when Posipal - who had scored an OG in Dublin became a National hero as he shot Herrmanns headed cross to the net after 32 minutes.
This goal restored Germany's confidence and playing attractive football they added to their score in the 77th minute when Walter scored with a shot which the reporter felt should have been saved by Kiernan in the Irish goal.
Three minutes before the end of the game Termath scored Germany's third goal.
Ireland were not without their efforts and were unfortunate when Kohlmeyer got back to block an effort from Fitzsimons and once again Fitzsimons failed to convert a good cross from Eglington.
It is worth noting that Germany replaced Herrmann with Stollenwerk after 43 mins
