Inspired substitution propels Ireland to victory
Ireland sit proudly on top of the Group this morning after a four nil hammering of Romania in a wet wind swept Dalymount Park last night before a larhe crowd of 2,012.
Sean Mc Caffrey’s men with goals by Fagan (2), Carey and Mc Dermott put themselves in a very strong position in this Elite Group to qualify for the Finals to be held in Luxembourg.
It certainly did not look like this in the first half. With Romania playing with a strong wind they looked comfortable on the ball and had Ireland on the back foot for most of the first half. It was during this time that Captain Lorcan Fitzgerald led by example breaking up a lot of Romanian attacks. Romania were close to taking the lead when Torje headed shot appeared to beat Redmond in goal and certainly from where I was sitting thought the ball sneaked into Redmond’s right hand side. However the ball had just sneaked the wrong side of the upright.
Ireland went in at half time in a commanding position having held Romania scoreless.
Sean Mc Caffrey made his first change at half time replacing Graham Carey with Harry Arter
The second half started with Romania surprisingly once more on the attack but the move of the game occurred in the 63rd minute when Sean Mc Caffrey replaced Tom Lyons with Cilian Sheridan.
The Belvedere man the only home based player in the squad was a revelation and within 60 seconds he had gone past Ferdin on the left wing and his pass seemed for a second to have eluded Christy Fagan but Fagan somehow managed to get a second touch and poke the ball past the stranded Razvan for the opening goal.
GrahamCarey1.jpgRomania were now rattled and when Graham Carey had shot from 40 yards out – one of those goals where the manager roars from the sideline”Graham what are you !!! Great goal Graham” .
The shot looked like it was going to be saved easily by Razvan in the Romanian goal but inexplicably the keeper allowed the ball fly past his hands and into the net for Irelands after 29 minutes.
Ireland were now rampant and Fagan headed a great goal after 33 minutes from an immaculate cross from man of the match Donal Mc Dermott.
In the 36th minute Mc Dermott got his just rewards as he scored after a defence splitting pass from Cilian Sheridan.
Romania were unlucky in the final minute when Torje was unlucky when he tried a clever chip over Redmond sheaf but the wind caught it and brought sailing beyond the Irish goal.
The Irish looked a class act and one piece of magic by Mc Dermott in the dying minutes when he hooked the ball over Ferdin’s head for Fitzgerald to run onto was worth the admission fee alone/
The one black spot for Ireland was the booking of Mc Dermott which now rules him out of the game against Israel who caused a little surprise in beating Serbia and Montenegro in Bray yesterday afternoon.
Irelkand's next match is now aginst Isreal on Wednesdau in Ricmond Park with once again a 7.00pm start. Sebia and Montenegro play Israel in Belfield at 2.30pm.
