Ian Evans and his players suffered an afternoon of humiliation and pain yesterday with Leeds United midfielder Stephen Mc Phail strtchered off and Everton's Richard Dunne sent off as Croatia clinched qualification for next summer's European u21 Championship Finals.
Mc Phail was stretcheredd off after only 6 minutes following a challenge for a 50-50 ball and things went from bad to worse for he Irish after that.
Quick fire goals froma taelented trio from the local Croatia Zagreb club - had Croatia 3-0 ahaed after 23 minutes and though Colin Hawkins reduced the deficit five minutes before the break with a thumping header from a Barry Quinn corner, there was never any chance of a comeback.
Dunne who was also sent off in Everton's premiership defeat at Derby last Saturday heaped shame on the Irish performance on 42 minutes when he cynically took the legs og Mikhael Mikie after the little striker slipped past him.
To their credit the 10 men battled on resoloutley in the second half, defending stoutly before substitute Bosuo Dalaban rammed two goals in the last two minutes to rub salt into the Irish wounds. |
