Roy played with Cobh Ramblers and Nottingham Forest before joining Manchester United in 1993.
Since at Old Trafford he has enjoyed tremendous success with them winning seven championships, three FA Cups and of course the European title in 1999, although he did miss the final due to suspension.
At the start of the 1997/98 season he took over the captaincy of United and has long been an invaluable member of the set-up there.
Roy won his first international cap against Chile in 1991 and played in the 1994 World Cup finals.
Although he missed the 2002 finals due to his infamous clash with Mick McCarthy he returned when Brian Kerr took over in a bid to help Ireland qualify for the 2006 finals.
He announced his retirement from International football in October 2005 when Ireland were eliminated from the World Cup of 2006.
