Tommy Clinton played for Dundalk F.C. in his native Ireland before joining Everton in 1948.

He made his League debut against Burnley in February 1949 and went on to make 80 appearances for Everton (73 League and 7 FA Cup appearances) scoring 5 goals (4 League and 1 FA Cup.

He is best remembered for a penalty miss in the Semi Final of the Cup against Bolton Wanderers. Although behind 4-0 at half time Everton fought back to 4-3 but could not draw level as Bolton went on to meet Blackpool in the "Stanley Matthews" final of 1953

He was eventually sold to Blackburn Rovers.after only a half dozen appearences he returned to Merseyside signing for Tranmere Rovers where he spent a year before finishing his career with Runcorn in non league football

He appeared three times for the Republic of Ireland national football team between 1951 and 1954.
