Alan Bennett (born 4 October 1981 in Cork, Republic of Ireland) is an Irish International footballer who currently plays in central defence for English Coca Cola Championship side Southampton F.C., where he is on loan from Reading F.C.
Club career Bennett joined Cork City from local club Richmond. He initially played in midfield, but during the 2004 season changed to centre-half. He made more than 100 appearances for the Rebel Army, scoring nine goals. Following several bids,Bennett joined Reading on a two and a half year contract for an undisclosed fee on 30 January 2007.[2]
On 31 July 2007 he was loaned for 6 months to Southampton and made his debut during a 1-4 home defeat to Crystal Palace.
International career Bennett received one cap for the Republic of Ireland U21 team in 2001.
In May 2007, he was called up to the full Republic of Ireland team for their two match trip two the United States.[3] Bennett played the full 90 minutes against Ecuador, helping Ireland to a 1-1 draw.[4] Bennett also played in the following match against Bolivia, which also ended 1-1.[5] During which he made a saving tackle to keep the Bolivians from going ahead.
